The list of Salamanca Monuments is very long; however, this summary will give you a great idea of what awaits you in our historic city.
Surviving history and promoting ideas
In the beginning, the Salamanca Pontifical Universitywas the Royal College of the Jesuit Order. It was built by Gómez de Mora in 1611, although it took 150 years to finish its construction. During a century and a half it was the headquarters of the Jesuits. It was from here that they spread out throughout the world as Catholic Missionaries. The Jesuit Order had the great misfortune of being expelled from Spain by Carlos III. The building was then abandoned, ransacked, expropriated and left in ruins. It was in the XX century that it once again became one entity and founded as ThePontifical University.
The entire structure is filled with corridors as it used to be a convent which surprisingly had no gardens.
