The list of Salamanca Monuments is very long; however, this summary will give you a great idea of what awaits you in our historic city.
Within its walls, the greatest thinkers of the time stayed to discuss life and the world
It was founded in the XVI century by one of the sons of Cardinal Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, one of the Duquesof Alba..What captivates you immediately is the incredible façade made from the Villamayor Sandstone, which shines and turns different shades as the sun sets. In the interior of this fantastic church, you will be amazed by the altarpiece, intimate cloisters and the impressive staircase. It continues to be the headquarters of The Dominicans of Salamanca, having housed some of the greatest thinkers and individuals of its time: Christopher Columbus, Diego de Deza, Ignacio de Loyola, Teresa de Jesús and many more.
Interesting anecdotes about St. Stephen´s Church
It was in the Profundis hall of this convent where Christopher Columbus won the support of The Dominicans for his journey to America via an alternative route. With their support, it was easier to gain the approval of the Catholic King and Queen.
You can also visit the confessional of Santa Teresa de Jesús (St. Teresa of Ávila), founder of the Discalced Carmelites, the only female founder of a masculine order, and one of the most recognized writers of Spanish Golden Age literature.
Another interesting part of the convent is the Soto Bridge (Puente de Soto) which ran down from the convent and crossed a stream which is now known as the Gran Vía of Salamanca.
