The list of Salamanca Monuments is very long; however, this summary will give you a great idea of what awaits you in our historic city.
Thanks toThe University of Salamanca, there was a notable increase in Salamanca´s population and city relevance at the end of the XV century. The Old Cathedral no longer had sufficient capacity and was too small for the needs of the city. At the same time, Gothic architecture had burst onto the scene, leaving the antiquated Roman-style structures behind. All of this resulted in the construction of the New Cathedral in 1513, making it one of the most important Cathedrals of Spain.
Interesting story about the Salamanca Cathedral
The Lisbon earthquake of 1755, severely damaged the bell tower of the Cathedral in such a way that the bells could only be reached by climbing the tower. Today, this tradition is commemorated on October 31st of every year, when a man called Mariquelo, wearing the traditional Charro outfit, climbs up to the weather-vane and sings!
Visitors can tour the Cathedral towers through the Jeronimus Exhibit. The tour takes us through the tower battlements, revealing the secret of their construction and 900 years of history, and also provides us with a unique perspective of the magnificent altarpiece.
